It was built on January 6, 1969 at the Newport News Shipyard. It was launched a year later and began service at the end of 1970.åÊAs the second advanced and powerful new amphibious operational command ship, the Whitney Shan can fully command and control the amphibious operations of the sea, land and air units in the fleet.åÊMount Whitney originally served as the flagship of the Second Fleet in the Atlantic.åÊIn 1999, Mount Whitney was sent to the Mediterranean to become the flagship of the US Navy's Sixth Fleet.åÊIn the 2002 ‰ÛÏEnduring Freedom‰۝ operation, she assumed the responsibility of commanding the operations of the Central Theater.åÊ
