In order to counter the enemy's night bombing operations, a series of night fighters began to be put into use. The Americans began their night fighter program in 1940 . It was not until 1943 Nian 10 Yue P-61 before the "Black Widow" service, they have been using Douglas P-70 "Havoc" and English "handsome warrior" to compete with the Japanese.
With the birth of the more powerful airborne interceptor radar SCR-720C , the military began to upgrade their P-61 to accommodate this latest radar. This black widow equipped with SCR-270C radar was named P-61B . The Type B lengthened the nose to accommodate the radar and reinstalled the back turret later.
