Developed as a successor to the F-4 as a large air superiority fighter, the F-15, which flew for the first time in the U.S. in 1972, has represented the United States Air Force for half a century since the Cold War. The Japan Air Self-Defense Force has also deployed domestically produced licensed versions of the F-15j as its main figure since December 1981. Starting in July 1984, it was mainly on alert duty for aircraft of unknown nationality that infringed on Japan's airspace.
