Renault’s Estafette is a serially produced van built in France between 1959-80 for civilian, police and gendarmerie use. Approximately 500,000 examples were produced during this period, to the point where the vehicle became something of a symbol of its era. The name ‘Estafette’ means courier, showing its official purpose as an ‘assistant’ to different services and small businesses. The Estafette depicted in this article is a 1964 example – this was a second-generation vehicle, produced until 1968 and featuring an 1108cc, 45hp engine coupled with a five-speed gearbox. Hence, it was possible to accelerate to 95km/h; the carrying capacity was 800kg, reflected in the designation – Estafette 800. Obviously, this is a bakery van working as a delivery vehicle with its recognisable livery.
