Development began in 1937, prior to World War II, with the prototype completed in 1938. While it did not meet the Army's requirements, the addition of drop tanks gave it a range of over 2,000 km. In\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan dir=\"auto\"\u003eApril 1941, the test aircraft, the Ki-43, was officially adopted as the Ki-1 Fighter. The first type, equipped with a Ha-25 engine, was called the Type I and featured two 7.7mm machine guns. Later, the armament was upgraded to one 7.7mm machine gun and one 12.7mm cannon. Furthermore, the Type II had its engine replaced with a Ha-115, and the propeller changed from a two-bladed to a three-bladed one.
