During World War II, Admiral Graf Spey cruised in the South Atlantic and Indian Ocean waters as a destroyer, threatening the important supply lines of the Allies. The Royal Navy sent a number of task forces to search for her. The total force includes 3 battleships, 2 battlecruisers, 4 aircraft carriers and 16 cruisers. On November 13, 1939, Admiral Graf Spey was spotted by a British naval task force consisting of three cruisers, and then engaged in battle at the mouth of the La Plata. During the battle, she severely damaged the British Heavy Patrol Exeter and forced her to withdraw from the battle, and she was also wounded. She then fled to the port of Montevideo, the capital of the neutral country of Uruguay, for repairs, but then her retreat was cut off-several British cruisers were on the open sea. On November 17, 1939, Admiral Graf Spee sailed out of the harbor and sank.
